I am a writer and a visual artist. I grew up in Ontario, Canada then spent nine years
living in the United States. In the early eighties I studied at Otis
College of Art and Design in California and later returned to Canada where I worked in fashion and advertising.
With the birth of my only child, in 1993, I put my
career and creative endeavors aside in order to be present at home and
available to my son. He was born with life threatening health issues
and has various special needs. During the early summer of 2006 I returned
to my artistic pursuits and began to avidly explore digital imagery.
I enjoy the freedom of abstract expression. Many of
my pieces are created from original digital photographs that I
manipulate using various image editing software programs including
Adobe Photoshop and Gimp. I focus on form and colour to create abstract images
that still retain some elements of the original picture. The results
have been described as deeply organic. I
enjoy pushing the limits of software and subject matter to see what I
can draw out of, what often start out as, mundane photographs.
I value the simple things in life: cherishing a moment; finding beauty in mundane things; using my poetic voice to share what I've learned and express myself to others. I believe in the economical use of words when expressing myself through poetry. This is why I often make use of the structured haiku format. I also write free verse but strive to maintain a similar sense of simplicity and clarity. I also combine my original digital images and words to create haiga which I create and market under the name Savvyology.
Why Savvyology & What Does It Mean?
I write poetry and create haiga (visual haiku) under the name Savvyology. The name holds special meaning for me and evolved out of my personal outlook on life and the experiences gained raising a son with multiple complex special needs. My life is an ongoing study and expression of practical understanding and enlightenment.
Savvyology:
savvy (n) Practical understanding; cognitive condition of someone who understands.
-ology (suffix) Discourse; expression; theory; study.
